Cassandra Mary is a singer-songwriter from Kuala Lumpur. She currently studies in San Jose State University in California. Though she’s far from home, her passion for music and songwriting has not dimmed at all.
“It takes up 90 percent of my time,” Cassandra said.
The rest of her time is spent going to the gym, being a foodie – like every real Malaysian, and studying Economics.
Cassandra began writing at 10, and was influenced by many genres of music. 11 years later, when asked about her writing style, she says
“I feel like I don’t want to be stuck in a box that is my ‘genre,’ so I am always trying to experiment with different sounds and styles.”
Her musical genius can be seen by her use of harmonics in “If You Blink, You’d Miss it all.”
Cassandra is well known in the KL music scene. She started off performing at small open mics, which opened doors for her to be featured alongside artists like Reza Salleh, Elizabeth Tan and Kyoto Protocol. In August 2014, Cassandra featured in Moonshine’s August Edition Spotlight show in Laundry Bar next to the Impatient Sisters and the Venopian Solitude.
“I’ve been a huge fan of The Impatient Sisters for a couple of years, and to have the opportunity to play on the same stage as them just less than a year after joining the local music scene was an absolute blessing,” Cassandra said.
What are your aspirations?
I hope to be relatively famous by the time I turn 27. Haha. By famous, I don’t mean insanely huge pop-stardom. But I just want to be able to inspire people from across the world with my music. It was never about the fame or the money; it was always about being heard and being understood and being able to change lives, making an impact in the world.
What would you say to encourage aspiring songwriters?
It’s about taking the sticks and stones and turning it into art. It’s about picking yourself up when everyone around you pushes you down.
Cassandra Mary will be releasing a single soon! Keep you eyes open, cause if you blink, you’ll miss it!
